Vestas Technology & Operations is where new product ideas are developed, matured, improved, and tested. Within R&D, you'll find our department, Tower Technical Management as part of Towers R&DTower R&D is responsible for developing and maintaining the entire Vestas tower program, covering a diverse range of tasks from structural engineering and specialized FEM calculations to requirements specification, DFMEA, test planning and execution, risk assessments, and certification documentation.
Tower Technical Management is a cross-functional sub-department within Tower R&D, tasked with final approval of comprehensive module requirements, ensuring technical quality, assessing risks, and delivering integrated solutions across the value chain and tower sub-modules.The team collaborates closely with the product function to analyze module requirements, define necessary performance improvements, and conduct feasibility studies.
This team is committed to fostering cross-functional alignment across tower sub-modules and throughout the full value chain, including procurement, manufacturing, transport, installation, and service.The Tower R&D team operates from three key locations: Aarhus, Denmark; Porto, Portugal; and Chennai, India. The Tower Technical Management team comprises six highly skilled specialists working across these hubs, ensuring cohesive collaboration across different geographical locations.
Responsibilities
As a Specialist for Transport, Construction & Maintenance (TCM), reporting to the Module Design Owner for Tower R&D, you will hold primary technical accountability for the TCM domain, working closely with the sub-module owner for this area. Your key responsibilities include
- Translating the Tower R&D strategy into a development roadmap for TCM, establishing achievable objectives for functional teams. Providing guidance and mentorship to functional leads within the TCM area
- Charting the future course for TCM advancement through the identification of key opportunities in strategic planning and technical development. Maintaining a competitive benchmark to ensure Vestas remains at the forefront of the industry
- Defining tools and process requirements in alignment with turbine specifications and the product roadmap
- Participating in peer and technical reviews, providing sign-off on technical solutions, risk assessments, and cost evaluations. Ensuring quality and integrity in design reviews and technical solutions within your area of expertise
- Driving cost reduction and quality improvement through standardization, modularization, and process efficiency enhancements
- Cultivating a network of contacts across suppliers, customers, product management, sales, production, universities, and test centers. Engaging with suppliers to align on market needs for relevant tools and processes
- Ensuring technical solutions are aligned with existing intellectual property rights (IPR) and identifying new IPR opportunities
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical, Structural, or Civil Engineering
- Comprehensive understanding of the full design lifecycle, from requirements scoping to end-of-life product management
- Proven experience with large components, including their transportation and heavy construction
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience
- Preferred experience in wind turbine generators; however, relevant experience from other heavy industries (e.g., automotive, aeronautical, oil & gas) will also be considered
Competencies
The ideal candidate demonstrates the following competencies and personal attributes- Significant technical expertise and proven ability to facilitate technology development
- Knowledge of transport and construction tools, processes, and relevant standards (e.g., CE, ANSI); wind turbine industry experience is beneficial
- Experience with tool design, DFMEA, DRA, HSE RA, PFMEA, and compliance to regulations
- Familiarity with Six Sigma tools, CAD, ECM, PDM-Link, and modular product development
- Process-oriented, structured, with a focus on quality and solutions
- Well-versed in English and skilled at delivering clear messages, with a leadership approach that anticipates needs and excels in stakeholder collaboration
- Skilled at building and maintaining global relationships and demonstrating technical leadership with business understanding
