The Position
As a Modern Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining cloud-based software solutions, and data engineering pipelines that support our research initiatives.You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, bioinformaticians, and other engineers, to deliver scalable and robust platforms and solutions.
Your expertise in cloud deployment, software and data engineering, and your familiarity with computational biology, computational drug design, and/or genetics will be important for driving our projects forward. We prioritize your engineering skills over having a formal background in pharmaceutical drug discovery.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Cloud Engineering: Deploy and manage cloud infrastructure on platforms such as AWS or Azure.
- Software Engineering: Develop, deploy and maintain scientific software solutions.
- Data Engineering: Develop and maintain data pipelines and ETL processes to ensure efficient data flow and integration.
- Collaboration: Work closely with data scientists, bioinformaticians, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions that meet their needs.
- Continuous Integration & Deployment: Implement CI/CD pipelines to automate testing, deployment, and monitoring of applications.
- Innovation: Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies, and proactively suggest improvements to our platforms and processes.
Qualifications
To thrive and succeed in this role, we would expect you to have:
- A Master's or Ph D degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience as a Cloud, Software, and/or Data Engineer with a strong portfolio of cloud-based solutions.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure and with database technologies, both SQL and No SQL.
- Proficiency in enterprise level software engineering, preferably with Python. Knowledge of .NET would be a plus.
- Understanding of data science within computational biology, computational drug design, or genetics is an advantage.
On a personal level, you possess strong cooperation skills while being able to work independently. You have excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail while having the ability to work in a fast-paced, agile environment. Furthermore, you are a strong communicator, who speaks and writes English fluently.

The department aims to bring innovative tools and support services that help computational researchers overcome analytical challenges and generate new insights from research data.The mission is to deliver robust, scalable, and fit-for-purpose research applications, platforms, and data engineering solutions. The department is part of Digital Science & Innovation (DSI).
Digital Science & Innovation (DSI) is supporting the digital journey across all our therapy areas in Research & Early Development (R&ED). In DSI, we work in multidisciplinary teams – in strong collaboration with all areas across R&ED and DD&IT R&ED.We participate in drug development projects across the value chain, from early discovery to pre-clinical development.
