SDU Innovation and Design Engineering (IDE) as part of the Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI), Faculty of Engineering (TEK) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites candidates to apply for a fully funded 3-year PhD position.

The (IDE) Research Unit

The research unit, SDU Innovation and Design Engineering, is a young, dynamic, and growing unit. We are a team-oriented, knowledge-sharing, and outgoing research unit in our approach to working with society, industry, and policymakers. We strive to push the boundaries of disciplines and continually seek to be the best version of ourselves, creating value both within and for society.

Project context

The scholarship is a collaborative effort in industrial automation, with a focus on assembly and disassembly. It is expected to be a cross-disciplinary collaboration between SDU Innovation and Design Engineering, SDU Robotic Engineers, and several major Danish stakeholders in the manufacturing sector.

The focus of the PhD candidate’s research is to analyse work processes and robotic tasks from a manufacturing perspective to optimise production lines. The candidate will gain theoretical knowledge and practical aspects of product assembly, disassembly, and quality management.

The position is available as of May 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The workplace is the SDU Campus Odense, with some travel required within Denmark.

Qualifications

The successful candidate holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering Science, preferably with a focus on Innovation and Product Development. The preferred candidate has a strong interest in advanced manufacturing of mechanical and electrical products and competencies in applying life cycle assessment data to derive decision support relevant to industry and/or academia.

Required qualifications:

  • A Master of Science degree, preferably with a focus on Engineering Product Development and Innovation or similar (equivalent to a Danish master's degree)
  • A strong motivation for advanced manufacturing and the ability to develop relevant theories and methodologies.
  • Strong competencies in product assembly/disassembly, manufacturing, platform design, and robotics
  • Experience with Digital Advanced Product Modelling using CAD design and simulations, and mathematics.
  • A strong motivation for collaborative projects within academia and industry
  • Proficiency in Danish is required due to collaboration with local partners.
  • Proficiency in English, either demonstrated through formal education or a Master's degree conducted in English.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Specialized understanding of product development, quality testing and robotic control systems
  • Experience with statistics, energy consumption analysis, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Application procedure

Assessment of the candidates is based on the application material, and an application must include:

  • Motivated application.
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • Completed TEK PhD application form for 5+3 applicants. Find the form at the Faculty website.
  • Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Find the form at the Faculty website.
  • An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish).
  • Master’s and bachelor’s degree certificates or equivalent, including transcripts (copy of original/official English translation).
  • Only for applicants from programmes that evaluate thesis/examination project by approved/not approved: An official written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
  • References may be included, you're welcome to use the form for reference letter at the Faculty website.
  • List of publications and maximum 2 examples of relevant publications (in case you have any publications).
  • A statement/documentation of other qualifications relevant to the position may also be included.

All documents must be in English and PDF format, no more than 5 MB per file. Documents should not contain a CPR number (civil registration number) – in this case, the CPR number must be crossed out.

Assessment and selection process

Conditions of employment

Appointment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position, and the monthly gross salary incl. pension is 35.707DKR. If you have relevant postgraduate experience, you may be placed on a higher salary step.

The preferred start date is from May 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter and will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission.

Enrollment will be in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).

Employment will be in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations for academics in the state with the associated circular on the job structure for academic staff at Danish universities and the provisions for PhD fellows as described herein as well as the Protocol on PhD fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
